Frequently Asked Questions
No. ApexLOAD PRO is a ballistics calculator, not a static load table. You can generate millions of load recipes by combining Hornady bullets with matching calibers and a wide range of powders. The sample load data shown below is provided only as an illustration and for easier comparison.
You're probably comparing different inputs. Make sure case capacity, cartridge overall length (COAL), and barrel length match exactly—even small differences will change predicted pressure and velocity. Always compare apples to apples.
Hornady's handbook groups data by bullet weight, not the exact bullet—140 gr bullets can vary in length, shape, and seating depth, all affecting pressure. ApexLOAD gives you load data tailored to the specific bullet design plus deeper ballistics: powder burn behavior, barrel time, and variables that help you build consistent, precise loads across all brands, not just Hornady.
The Hornady app ($19.99/year) is a digital handbook—tested recipes for Hornady bullets only. ApexLOAD PRO ($34.50/year) is a ballistics calculator with 4,895+ bullets, 436+ calibers, and 264+ powders from all brands, generating millions of calculated load combinations. If you shoot multiple brands or want deeper load development tools, ApexLOAD gives you far more range.
Long-range hunting—elk, deer, bear at 100–800+ yards. The Heat Shield tip resists melting in flight, keeping the BC stable, and the bullet expands reliably from close high-velocity impacts down to reduced velocity at extreme range. Available 6 mm through .338.
ELD-X is for hunting (controlled expansion, deep penetration); ELD Match is for competition (optimized for accuracy, not terminal performance). Both use the Heat Shield tip for consistent BC. Use ELD-X on game, ELD Match for PRS, F-Class, or benchrest.
Yes. ApexLOAD PRO pairs Hornady bullets with 264+ powders from all major brands—Hodgdon, Alliant, Vihtavuori, IMR, and more. Use the Parametric Powder Search to find the best powder for your Hornady bullet, caliber, and velocity target.
For competition, the 147 gr ELD Match is the go-to—highest BC, extremely consistent. For hunting, the 143 gr ELD-X delivers reliable expansion and penetration on deer and elk out to 800 yards. Both work great in 6.5 Creedmoor with medium-burn powders.
No. V-MAX are designed for varmints—explosive expansion, thin jackets. They'll fragment on deer-sized game and won't penetrate reliably. Use SST, InterBond, or ELD-X for deer instead.
Lever-action rifles with tubular magazines—.30-30 Win., .35 Rem., .45-70. The soft flex tip won't ignite primers under recoil but still expands on impact, giving lever guns much better ballistics than old round-nose bullets.
For deer at typical ranges (under 300 yards), the 150 or 165 gr SST or InterLock work great. For elk or longer shots, step up to the 178 gr ELD-X for better BC and penetration. Check .308 Win. load data for each bullet.
Not universally, but ELD Match and A-TIP bullets often shoot best at specific jump distances—start at 0.020" off the lands and tune from there. Use the Optimal Barrel Time tool to refine seating depth and powder charge together for best accuracy.
