6 mm GT Load Data & Reloading Guide
Also known as: 6mm GT, 6mm Grendel Tactical
About 6 mm GT
The 6 mm GT is a relatively new caliber, developed in collaboration between George Gardner of GA Precision and Tom Jacobs of Vapor Trail Bullets, thus earning the "GT" designation. Introduced to the shooting community around 2019, this cartridge was specifically designed to address the needs of precision rifle competitors. The developers aimed to create a caliber that balanced improved ballistic performance and efficient case design, building upon the lessons learned from other popular 6 mm cartridges like the 6 mm Creedmoor and 6 mm Dasher.
Technically, the 6 mm GT offers several features attractive to reloaders. The cartridge is characterized by a 35-degree shoulder angle, providing optimal space for efficient powder combustion. The case length measures approximately 1.89 inches, ensuring smooth feeding in short-action rifles while allowing the use of longer, high ballistic coefficient (BC) bullets. The caliber was engineered for loading various bullet weights, typically ranging from 105 to 110 grains, with an overall cartridge length suitable for universal magazine compatibility.
In terms of ballistic performance, the 6 mm GT delivers impressive results for long-range shooting. When paired with bullets like the 105-grain Hybrid Target or the 109-grain Long Range Hybrid Target, it can achieve muzzle velocities in the range of 2950 to 3050 feet per second, depending on load specifics and barrel length. This velocity range provides a flat trajectory and low recoil, making it highly suitable for competitive shooting disciplines such as Precision Rifle Series (PRS) and other tactical competitions.
For reloaders, the 6 mm GT offers several advantages. Its efficient case design reduces case wear and extends the life of brass, minimizing the frequency of trimming and other maintenance. The mild recoil and stability from various powder combinations optimize the reloading process, achieving consistent performance across different environmental conditions. Furthermore, the availability of high-quality reloading components and modern pressure management make it an appealing choice for those interested in fine-tuning loads for specific applications. Overall, the 6 mm GT is a versatile caliber that combines innovative design with practical benefits for both competitive shooters and dedicated hobbyist reloaders.
