7 mm STW Load Data & Reloading Guide
Also known as: 7mm STW, 7mm Short Magnum, 7mm STW Magnum
About 7 mm STW
The 7 mm Shooting Times Westerner (STW) is a belted magnum rifle cartridge developed in the 1970s by noted gun writer Layne Simpson. It gained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s for its impressive long-range performance capabilities. Originating from a necked-down and modified 8 mm Remington Magnum case, the 7 mm STW aimed to improve upon existing 7 mm cartridges by increasing velocity and downrange energy. Its development was driven by the desire to maintain excellent ballistics while using high-ballistic-coefficient projectiles.
Technically, the 7 mm STW features a case length of 2.850 inches (72.39 mm) and accommodates projectiles with a diameter of .284 inches. Among its standout characteristics is its case capacity, which allows for significant powder loads, providing high muzzle velocities in the range of 3,200 feet per second with 140-grain bullets. The cartridge often delivers over 1,300 yards of effective range, making it a top choice for those who seek flat trajectories and impressive terminal performance at extended distances.
For reloaders, the 7 mm STW supports a versatile range of bullet weights from 120 to 175 grains, aligning with diverse applications from varmint hunting to big game pursuits. Reloading enthusiasts particularly appreciate the cartridge’s flexibility in tailoring performance to specific hunting and sporting needs. Its ability to handle heavy-for-caliber bullets while maintaining precision and speed is of great advantage in achieving optimal loads for different conditions.
Beyond hunting, the 7 mm STW’s attributes have found favor in long-range and precision shooting circles. Its substantial case capacity supports high-energy loads that benefit those engaging in competitive scenarios requiring reliability and accuracy. The cartridge’s legacy is supported by its consistent performance, making it a respected option for reloaders aiming to maximize the ballistic potential of 7 mm projectiles.
