About 7 FCP

The 7 FCP is a modern wildcat cartridge developed for precision rifle competitions and long-range shooting. This cartridge emerged from the need to optimize ballistic performance while maintaining compatibility with widely available rifle actions, such as those based on the popular 6.5 Creedmoor case. The 7 FCP achieves this by necking up the 6.5 Creedmoor case to accept 7mm bullets, creating a versatile platform that excels in both competitive shooting and hunting applications.

Technically, the 7 FCP retains the parent case's overall dimensions, ensuring compatibility with standard short-action rifles. This allows shooters to utilize the excellent case design of the Creedmoor family, known for its efficient powder burn and excellent accuracy potential. With case capacities generally ranging around 52 to 55 grains of powder, the 7 FCP provides a balanced load capacity that supports a wide range of bullet weights. Typically, bullet weights for this caliber range from 140 to 180 grains, with the sweet spot often found in the 160 to 170-grain range for optimum ballistic coefficients and stability.

Ballistically, the 7 FCP offers impressive performance with a flat trajectory suitable for long-range engagements. Given its ability to drive 160-grain bullets at velocities approaching 2800 feet per second, the cartridge is capable of delivering exceptional accuracy and sufficient energy retention at extended ranges. This makes it highly attractive for precision shooting competitors and hunters alike, who value terminal performance and ballistic efficiency.

For reloaders, the 7 FCP presents a range of benefits. Its design allows for flexible load development, accommodating various powder types and ballistic goals. Reloaders can experiment with different seating depths and powder charges to tailor performance to specific shooting needs, whether that involves fine-tuning for sub-MOA accuracy or optimizing terminal ballistics for hunting scenarios. The availability of high-quality, high-BC 7mm bullets further enhances the reloader’s ability to extract maximum performance from this versatile cartridge.
