About 7 mm SAW
The 7 mm SAW, or Squad Automatic Weapon, originated during a research program in the 1970s aimed at improving the firepower of NATO forces. This experimental cartridge was developed by the Frankford Arsenal and was intended to bridge the gap between the 5.56x45mm NATO and the 7.62x51mm NATO. The goal was to deliver a round with superior range, accuracy, and terminal performance while maintaining manageable recoil and portability for automatic rifles.
Technically, the 7 mm SAW showcased a case length of 51mm, similar to the 7.62 mm NATO, but featured a slimmer case and a 7 mm diameter bullet. This configuration allowed for higher velocity and a flatter trajectory compared to the larger 30-caliber rounds. Typical bullet weights for the 7 mm SAW ranged around 120 to 130 grains, allowing the cartridge to deliver impressive energy and ballistic coefficients for intermediate range engagements.
In terms of ballistic performance, the 7 mm SAW was designed to provide superior mid-range performance with a flatter trajectory and less wind drift than the 5.56 mm, while achieving better penetration than its smaller counterparts.
