7 mm Rem. Mag. Load Data & Reloading Guide
Also known as: 7mm Remington Magnum, 7mm Rem Mag, 7×64mm Remington Magnum
About 7 mm Rem. Mag.
The 7mm Remington Magnum was introduced by Remington in 1962 and quickly established itself as a versatile and high-performance magnum cartridge. Developed for the Remington 700 rifle, it capitalized on magnum performance in a more practical, beltless design, derived from the .375 H&H Magnum case, shortened and necked down to accept .284-inch (7 mm) bullets. Its development marked a significant leap forward in achieving higher velocities and flatter trajectories in a more compact form factor suitable for a range of applications. Technically, the 7mm Rem Mag features a case length of 2.5 inches and an overall length of 3.29 inches. This cartridge is capable of pushing bullets ranging from 120 to 175 grains at velocities between 3,000 to 3,280 feet per second, depending on the load and bullet weight. The high ballistic coefficients of 7mm projectiles, along with substantial case capacity, contribute to its excellent downrange energy retention and penetration, making it highly favored among large game hunters and long-range shooters. The 7mm Remington Magnum excels in hunting applications, particularly for medium to large game such as deer, elk, and moose due to its powerful ballistics and the capability of providing a one-shot ethical kill at longer ranges. For sport shooters and competitive marksmen, it is often chosen for its long-range accuracy and consistency, which are pivotal in precision events. From a reloading perspective, the 7mm Rem Mag offers a wide variety of bullet choices and powder configurations, allowing reloaders to tailor their loads for specific performance needs or shooting disciplines. Reloading provides significant cost advantages and optimizes performance factors, such as recoil and precision, to suit individual preferences or specific game requirements.
