9 mm Para Load Data & Reloading Guide

Also known as: 9mm Parabellum, 9×19mm, 9mm Luger, 9mm NATO

About 9 mm Para

The 9 mm Luger, also known as 9 x 19 mm Parabellum, was developed by Georg Luger in 1901 for the German arms manufacturer Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM). This caliber gained worldwide recognition following its adoption by the German military in 1908 and has since become one of the most widely used pistol cartridges globally. Its favorability is due to its balanced performance in terms of recoil, stopping power, and capacity, which suits a variety of firearms from subcompact pistols to submachine guns.

Technically, the 9 mm Luger features a rimless, tapered casing with a bullet diameter of 9.01 mm (0.355 inches) and a case length of 19.15 mm (0.754 inches). Maximum pressure under C.I.P. standards is set at around 34,084 psi, which allows for consistent ballistic performance. Standard bullet weights for this caliber range from 115 to 147 grains, with the 124-grain full metal jacket (FMJ) being particularly popular among reloaders for its balance between speed and energy.

In terms of ballistic performance, the 9 mm Luger achieves velocities typically between 1,100 and 1,200 fps with energy outputs sufficient for self-defense, law enforcement, and sporting applications. Its moderate recoil makes it an excellent choice for competition shooters in International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) matches and target practice.

For reloaders, the 9 mm Luger provides several advantages. The availability of components, including brass, bullets, and a wide range of powders, ensures flexibility and cost-effective reloading. Additionally, extensive ballistic data makes it easy for reloaders to tailor loads to specific firearms or shooting disciplines. Its uniform dimensions and forgiving characteristics in reloading make it an ideal caliber for both novice and experienced reloaders seeking both precision and performance flexibility.
