6.5-06 A-Square Load Data & Reloading Guide
Also known as: 6.5x63mm A-Square, 6.5-06mm A-Square
About 6.5-06 A-Square
The 6.5-06 A-Square, developed by A-Square Company, is a wildcat cartridge resulting from necking-down the .30-06 Springfield case to accept 6.5mm (.264 inch) bullets. This modification enhances the ballistic efficiency and versatility of the already popular .30-06 platform. The cartridge became popular among handloaders and long-range shooters during the late 20th century for its improved ballistic coefficients and flat trajectory.
Key technical characteristics of the 6.5-06 A-Square include a case length of 63.35 mm and a total cartridge length of approximately 84 mm. It performs best in rifles with a barrel twist rate of 1:8 to stabilize projectiles effectively. The case capacity is expansive, akin to the parent .30-06, providing ample room for powder that aids in achieving higher muzzle velocities compared to the standard 6.5mm offerings. Typical bullet weights range from 120 grains to 140 grains, offering a balance between high velocity and manageable recoil.
Ballistically, the 6.5-06 A-Square offers notable performance, reaching muzzle velocities of 3000 to 3200 feet per second with a 140-grain bullet, resulting in excellent downrange energy and flat shooting capabilities. This makes the cartridge suitable for medium to large game hunting, including deer and elk, and also appealing for long-range target shooting and competitive applications due to its accuracy and sustained performance over distance.
From a reloading perspective, the 6.5-06 A-Square presents several advantages. Its non-standard status in commercial ammunition means that handloaders can fine-tune loads to their specific rifles, adjusting powder loads and bullet types for optimal performance. Additionally, the widespread availability of .30-06 brass makes forming cases an accessible task. The cartridge's capacity supports a variety of powders, offering flexibility in achieving desired ballistics and catering to family compatibility for those already loading .30-06.
