.460 S&W Mag. Load Data & Reloading Guide

Also known as: .460 Smith & Wesson Magnum, .460 S&W, .460 Magnum

About .460 S&W Mag.

The .460 S&W Magnum was introduced by Smith & Wesson in 2005, developed in collaboration with Hornady and Cor-Bon. Designed to be the most powerful production revolver cartridge during its inception, it was intended primarily for hunting large game and is chambered in the Smith & Wesson X-Frame revolver. The creation of this caliber marked a significant milestone in magnum revolver cartridges, delivering exceptional velocity and energy levels.

The .460 S&W Magnum features a case length of 1.8 inches and utilizes a diameter of .452 inches for the bullet, similar to other cartridges in its family like the .454 Casull and .45 Colt, which can also be fired from a revolver chambered for the .460. It achieves high velocities, sometimes exceeding 2,200 feet per second, depending on the bullet weight and powder charge used. Common bullet weights range from 200 to 395 grains, covering a broad spectrum for a variety of shooting needs.

Ballistically, the .460 S&W Magnum excels in delivering flat trajectories and substantial stopping power, making it ideal for big game hunting. The high velocity allows for impressive energy transfer and penetration, suitable for North American big game animals such as moose and bear. Its versatility in handling different bullet types and weights also makes it a noteworthy choice for handgun metallic silhouette competitions and the shooting sports community.

For reloaders, the .460 S&W Magnum offers significant advantages. The ability to load a wide range of bullet weights and styles provides the reloader with flexibility to tailor ammunition for specific purposes, from target shooting to hunting. With quality brass and careful load development, reloaders can optimize the cartridge's high velocity potential while managing recoil, offering personal comfort and customization rarely matched by factory ammunition. Reloaders must ensure high-quality components and precise techniques to safely harness the cartridge’s powerful capabilities.
