About .30-40 Krag
The .30-40 Krag, also known as .30 Army, was developed in the 1890s to serve as the United States Army's first smokeless powder cartridge. Based on the design of the Krag–Jørgensen rifle, it introduced the concept of a modern, metallic cartridge to military applications. The .30-40 Krag was officially adopted in 1892 and saw service through the Spanish-American War and into World War I before being phased out in favor of more powerful cartridges.
Technically, the .30-40 Krag has a parent case length of 2.2 inches and a typical overall cartridge length of around 3.0 inches. It utilizes a .308-inch bullet diameter, accommodating various bullet weights, generally ranging from 150 to 220 grains. The most common loadings produce velocities between 2,300 and 2,700 feet per second, which delivers effective energy downrange while maintaining moderate recoil.
In terms of applications, the .30-40 Krag excels in hunting medium to large game and is effective for recreational shooting and historical reenactments. Its relatively mild recoil makes it suitable for shooters of all experience levels. For reloaders, the .30-40 Krag presents advantages such as the availability of a broad range of bullet choices and powder selection, allowing for tailored loads that cater to specific performance or accuracy needs. Additionally, older brass may be repurposed, making it a cost-effective option for shooters interested in precision loading.
