The 8 x 64 S cartridge was developed in Germany in the 1920s by Wilhelm Brenneke, who sought to create an effective sporting cartridge capable of approaching the performance of military rounds without infringing upon regulations that prohibited civilians from using military calibers. Originally designed as a round for large game hunting, its development was influenced by the ballistic potential and military usage of similar but prohibited 8 mm rounds like the 8 x 57 IS. Brenneke aimed to deliver a powerful European alternative for hunters who desired long-range capability and higher energy transfer.
Technically, the 8 x 64 S employs a case length of 64 mm, allowing for increased powder capacity compared to the older 8 x 57 IS.
