About 8 x 60 S

The 8 x 60 S caliber emerged as a key solution for German firearms enthusiasts and military veterans after World War I, primarily due to the restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. This treaty limited civilian use of military cartridges like the 8 x 57 IS. In response, gunmakers adapted by extending the cartridge case by three millimeters, thus circumventing the restrictions while still utilizing existing rifles with minor chamber modifications.

Technically, the 8 x 60 S retains the same case head diameter and bullet diameter as the original 8 x 57 IS, but distinguishes itself with a longer 60-millimeter case. This additional case length increases powder capacity, theoretically allowing for higher muzzle velocities while maintaining safe pressures. Its shoulder angle remains at 20 degrees, similar to its predecessor, which aids in reliable feeding in bolt-action rifles like the Mauser 98, often used for rechambering.

Ballistically, the 8 x 60 S provides performance comparable to the .30-06 Springfield, typically supporting heavier bullet weights from 180 to 200 grains. With factory or hand-loaded ammunition, velocities can range between 2600 to 2900 feet per second, making it a formidable choice for medium to large game hunting. Its energy output and trajectory are suitable for moose, red deer, and wild boar, as well as for competitive shooting disciplines where classic calibers are favored.

For reloaders, the 8 x 60 S offers the benefit of versatility in bullet selection and powder loads. Its adaptation from the widely available 8 x 57 IS components means that brass can often be formed from .30-06 cases, and bullets designed for the 8 mm bore remain perfectly compatible. Consequently, this caliber allows for personalized load development, optimizing performance for specific firearms and hunting or competitive requirements.
