.40 S&W Load Data & Reloading Guide
Also known as: .40 Smith & Wesson, 10mm Short, .40 Auto
About .40 S&W
The .40 S&W (Smith & Wesson) cartridge was developed in the early 1990s in response to a need for a more powerful sidearm cartridge for law enforcement agencies, seeking a balance between the 9x19mm Parabellum and the .45 ACP. Its development followed the infamous 1986 FBI Miami shootout, which highlighted the limitations of existing service calibers. Consequently, Smith & Wesson collaborated with Winchester to produce a cartridge that offered ballistics similar to the 10mm Auto, but with a shorter case suitable for medium-sized semi-automatic pistols, leading to the .40 S&W's introduction in 1990.
The .40 S&W cartridge features a bullet diameter of 0.400 inches (10.16 mm) with a case length of 0.850 inches (21.59 mm). It typically operates at a maximum pressure of around 35,000 psi. Standard bullet weights range from 135 to 180 grains, with 165 and 180 grains being the most common for law enforcement and personal defense applications. These bullets generally achieve velocities between 950 and 1200 feet per second, depending on the load and firearm. The .40 S&W is known for its effective stopping power and flat trajectory at typical engagement ranges.
Ballistically, the .40 S&W offers a compromise between the higher capacity and lower recoil of the 9mm and the greater stopping power of the .45 ACP. It is widely used in law enforcement and self-defense scenarios due to its combination of manageable recoil and performance. The cartridge is also popular in various shooting sports, including practical shooting disciplines where its power factor is advantageous.
Reloaders appreciate the .40 S&W for its adaptability and performance consistency. With a wide range of available bullet weights and types, reloaders can tailor loads for specific purposes – be it reduced-recoil practice rounds or optimized defensive loads. Furthermore, the abundance of once-fired brass from law enforcement and civilian use makes it a cost-effective choice for those who reload their own ammunition. Its manageable case size also simplifies the reloading process, making it a practical choice for both new and experienced reloaders.
