.375 Ruger Load Data & Reloading Guide
Also known as: .375 Ruger Rifle, .375 Ruger Magnum, 9.5×57mm Ruger
About .375 Ruger
The .375 Ruger is a versatile rifle cartridge introduced in 2007 by Hornady in collaboration with Ruger. Designed to compete with traditional African big game cartridges, the .375 Ruger offers a modern alternative to the .375 H&H Magnum. It was developed with the goal of fitting into standard-length rifle actions while still providing the power necessary for hunting large and dangerous game.
Technically, the .375 Ruger utilizes a rimless, belted case design that optimizes powder capacity and efficiency. The case measures 2.580 inches in length, and unlike the .375 H&H, the .375 Ruger does not require a belted case, allowing for more streamlined chambering. It supports impressive ballistic performance, delivering muzzle velocities up to 2,840 feet per second with 270-grain bullets, which contributes to its effective range and penetration capabilities.
In terms of loading, the .375 Ruger typically accommodates bullet weights between 200 and 300 grains, with 270 and 300-grain bullets being the most common for hunting larger game. Due to its capability to manage heavier bullets at high velocities, it is a favored selection for hunting large North American game as well as African big game species. This caliber provides reloaders with significant flexibility in bullet choice and powder load configurations.
For reloaders, the .375 Ruger presents several advantages. The absence of a belt on the case simplifies the reloading process and case management. This, combined with the cartridge's efficiency in using modern powders, allows for precise customization to suit specific hunting or shooting needs. The .375 Ruger's case design also ensures efficient feeding and extraction, enhancing reliability in field conditions, which is critical for dangerous game hunting.
