About .375 H&H Mag.

The .375 Holland & Holland Magnum, originally developed by the British company Holland & Holland in 1912, is a rifle cartridge designed to meet the needs of hunters pursuing big game. Its design was intended to provide effective performance on dangerous African game, famously fitting well in both bolt-action and double rifles. It played a significant role in African safaris throughout the 20th century and remains a popular choice among big game hunters worldwide.

In terms of technical characteristics, the .375 H&H Magnum uses a belted, rimless bottleneck case design. The belted feature supports head-spacing reliability and enhances the cartridge's ability to cycle smoothly in a variety of firearm actions. It typically operates at pressures around 62,000 psi, allowing for a relatively flat trajectory and substantial stopping power. Bullet diameters are standardized at .375 inches (9.5 mm), and the cartridge case length measures about 2.850 inches (72.39 mm).

Ballistically, the .375 H&H Magnum excels with a wide range of bullet weights, commonly between 270 to 300 grains. The choice of bullet weight can significantly alter performance, with 270-grain bullets achieving higher velocities upwards of 2,700 feet per second, ideal for plains game, and 300-grain bullets offering superior penetration for thick-skinned dangerous game. The versatility in bullet weights is beneficial for reloaders, allowing customization of loads depending on the game pursued.

For hunters and sport shooters, the .375 H&H Magnum offers exceptional versatility and reliability. Besides its effective big-game capabilities, reloaders can appreciate the cartridge's moderate recoil compared to other big-game calibers. This makes it easier to develop custom loads with specific performance characteristics. Reloading for the .375 H&H can also be an economical practice, particularly given the often high cost of factory-loaded cartridges. Its long-established history and proven effectiveness ensure its continued favor among hunters and reloaders alike.
