The .358 Winchester was introduced by Winchester in 1955, based on the .308 Winchester case, necked up to accept a .35 caliber bullet. It was developed to provide improved stopping power and energy transfer over the .308, making it ideal for larger game hunting. Although not as widely popular as some other calibers, it found favor among hunters seeking a cartridge capable of handling North American game such as elk, moose, and black bear at moderate ranges.
