About .338 Federal

The .338 Federal was introduced in 2006 as a collaborative effort between Federal Premium Ammunition and Sako. Derived from the .308 Winchester case, it was designed to provide improved performance in terms of energy and penetration without the need for magnum-sized rifles. The .338 Federal fills a niche between standard and magnum calibers, offering hunters a versatile option for medium to large game with manageable recoil.

This caliber employs a necked-up .308 Winchester case to accept .338-inch diameter bullets, providing a balance between manageable recoil and substantial ballistic performance. Typical bullet weights for the .338 Federal range from 180 to 210 grains, although custom reloaders may experiment with weights outside this standard range, up to 225 grains for specific applications. The caliber demonstrates impressive ballistic coefficients and energy transfer, making it particularly effective at medium ranges.

From a reloading perspective, the .338 Federal offers several advantages. Its standard brass dimensions derived from the popular .308 Winchester make sourcing components straightforward and cost-effective. Reloaders appreciate the caliber's flexibility in bullet selection, allowing them to tailor loads for various hunting or target shooting applications. Additionally, its capability to deliver high energy on target with relatively moderate powder charges benefits both barrel life and shooting comfort.

In terms of applications, the .338 Federal is favored for hunting larger game such as elk and moose due to its effective knock-down power. It also finds a place in sport shooting, where its enhanced performance compares favorably with other mid-sized calibers. The .338 Federal allows hunters and competitive shooters alike to achieve desired results without the increased recoil associated with larger magnum calibers, making it a practical choice for diverse situations.
