.22 TCM Load Data & Reloading Guide
Also known as: .22 TCM 9R, .22 TCM 9mm, .22 TCM Rimfire
About .22 TCM
The .22 TCM, or Tuason Craig Mitrailleuse, was developed in the early 2010s by the Rock Island Armory as a high-velocity handgun cartridge. It was designed to combine the characteristics of small-caliber precision with significant kinetic energy, primarily intended for competitive shooting and self-defense applications. The cartridge is a necked-down version of the .223 Remington, focusing on achieving high velocities in a compact form.
Technically, the .22 TCM features a bullet diameter of .224 inches and is typically loaded to achieve velocities exceeding 2,000 feet per second. The cartridge length is approximately 1.25 inches, which allows for efficient feeding and chambering in standard 1911-style pistols. Reloaders appreciate its relatively low recoil and the ability to use various bullet types, ranging from full metal jacket (FMJ) to hollow points, with typical bullet weights ranging from 35 to 40 grains.
In terms of ballistic performance, the .22 TCM exhibits impressive muzzle energy, making it suitable for small game hunting and personal protection. Its high velocity contributes to flat trajectories, improving accuracy at various ranges. The cartridge's versatility allows reloaders to experiment with different powder charges and bullet designs, optimizing performance based on specific applications.
For reloaders, the .22 TCM presents several advantages, including the availability of various bullet options and the potential for customizing loads to enhance performance characteristics. The cartridge's efficient powder burn and manageable recoil make it an attractive option for practice and competition shooting. Overall, the .22 TCM is a capable and innovative caliber that appeals to reloaders seeking a balance of performance and versatility.
