6.5 Grendel Load Data & Reloading Guide
Also known as: 6.5 Grendel II, 6.5×39mm Grendel, 6.5 G
About 6.5 Grendel
The 6.5 Grendel caliber was developed by Arne Brennan and Bill Alexander in 2003, with a goal to optimize the performance of the AR-15 platform by using a medium caliber cartridge, which could effectively reach out in longer distances than the standard 5.56 NATO round. It was designed to bridge the gap between 5.56 NATO and heavier-duty calibers like the 7.62 NATO, offering improved ballistic performance and energy delivery at ranges exceeding 800 yards while maintaining manageable recoil.
Technically, the 6.5 Grendel is based on the 6.5 mm bore diameter, with a case length of 1.52 inches and an overall cartridge length of 2.26 inches. It utilizes a distinctively rebated rim and relatively steep shoulder angle for improved powder burn efficiency. Common bullet diameters used in this caliber measure 0.264 inches, and powder capacity is optimized for fast or intermediate burning powders, which contribute to its high efficiency in the AR-15 platform.
In terms of ballistic performance, the 6.5 Grendel is renowned for offering excellent retained energy and wind resistance at longer distances due to the high ballistic coefficient of its bullets. Typical bullet weights range from 90 to 130 grains, where 123 grain bullets are often favored for their balance between velocity and ballistic efficiency. This caliber can achieve muzzle velocities between 2500 to 2700 feet per second, delivering consistent accuracy and adequate terminal performance for hunting medium-sized game like deer and antelope.
For reloaders, the 6.5 Grendel offers numerous advantages, including the widespread availability of high-quality component bullets, especially those suited for both hunting and target shooting. The moderate pressures involved, generally peaking around 52,000 psi, also mean that brass cases can often be reloaded multiple times without undue wear. The caliber's balance between recoil and manageable pressures makes it an appealing choice for precision shooters and competitors, offering consistent performance in varied conditions without requiring a transition to a heavier rifle platform.
Technical Drawing
Based on C.I.P., the max. allowed case length is 1.520 in / 38.61 mm, the max. cartridge length is 2.260 in / 57.40 mm, and the max. allowed pressure is 58,740 PSI / 4,050 bar.
