About .380 ACP
The .380 ACP (9mm kurz) was introduced by John Moses Browning and first produced by Colt in 1908. Designed to be a compact and light round suitable for self-defense, it gained popularity in Europe and the United States. Known for its suitability for small, lightweight pistols, the .380 ACP is also referred to as 9mm Browning, 9x17mm, and 9mm Kurz, indicating its European roots. Although it saw military use, its primary role has been in civilian self-defense firearms.
Technically, the .380 ACP features a straight-walled, rimless case with a case length of 17mm and an overall length of 25mm. Its bullet diameter is approximately 9mm, with a standard bullet weight typically ranging from 85 to 100 grains. The cartridge uses small pistol primers and operates at a relatively low pressure of 21,500 psi, making it manageable for shooters in terms of recoil. This low recoil is a significant advantage in compact handguns, where controllability is a critical factor.
