The .357 Maximum, developed in the early 1980s by Elgin Gates in collaboration with Remington and Ruger, emerged from a desire to extend the capabilities of revolvers, primarily for silhouette shooting. Designed from the .357 Magnum, the .357 Maximum has a longer case, allowing for increased powder capacity and higher velocity, making it more powerful than its predecessor.
Technically, the .357 Maximum features a case length of 1.605 inches, significantly longer than the .357 Magnum's 1.29 inches. While it shares the same bullet diameter of .357 inches, the increased case length facilitates higher pressures, yielding faster velocities. The cartridge typically fires bullets ranging from 158 to 180 grains, with the latter more commonly used for maximum energy transfer and penetration.
The ballistic performance of the .357 Maximum offers substantial improvements over traditional .357 Magnum loads, especially in terms of velocity and energy.
