.270 WSM Load Data & Reloading Guide
Also known as: .270 Winchester Short Magnum, 6.8×68mm
About .270 WSM
The .270 Winchester Short Magnum (WSM) was introduced in 2002 as part of Winchester’s family of short magnum cartridges. Designed to offer magnum-level performance from a short action rifle, the .270 WSM aimed to combine the flat trajectory of the popular .270 Winchester with the advantages of modern cartridge design. By operating at higher pressures, it provides enhanced velocity and energy in a compact form.
Technically, the .270 WSM utilizes a rimless, bottleneck case with a short, fat profile that maximizes powder capacity for efficient combustion. The cartridge achieves optimal ballistic performance using a case length of 2.10 inches and an overall length of approximately 2.860 inches, which comfortably fits short action rifles. The relatively large diameter of the case base ensures reliable feeding and extraction, owing to a robust design that enhances performance under diverse conditions.
Ballistically, the .270 WSM excels with muzzle velocities in the range of 3,100 to 3,300 feet per second, depending on bullet weight. Common bullet weights for this caliber range from 130 to 150 grains, with the 140-grain bullet often cited for its balance between speed and downrange energy. This performance profile makes the cartridge well-suited for medium to large game hunting, such as deer and elk, over varied terrain and at extended distances.
For the reloader, the .270 WSM presents distinct advantages. It offers great versatility with various bullet types and weights, accommodating a wide array of hunting scenarios. The case design supports efficient powder burn, allowing reloaders to experiment with different powders and primers to achieve desired ballistic results. Its efficient design also leads to excellent accuracy potential, rewarding those who invest in precise handloading techniques.
