.257 Ackley Improved Load Data & Reloading Guide
Also known as: .257 AI, .257 Ackley, .257 Ackley Imp.
About .257 Ackley Improved
The .257 Ackley Improved, developed in the 1940s by gunsmith P.O. Ackley, is a necked-up variant of the .250 Savage cartridge. Ackley sought to enhance the performance of existing cartridges through improvements in case design, allowing for increased powder capacity and, consequently, higher velocities. The design features a sharper shoulder and a slightly increased case length, which contributes to better case extraction and reduced case stretching.
Technical characteristics include a shoulder angle of approximately 40 degrees and a case length of 2.1 inches. Typical reloading weights range from 85 to 120 grains, with common bullet types including hollow points and soft points. The .257 Ackley Improved exhibits excellent ballistic performance, generating velocities that can exceed 3,200 feet per second, making it suitable for both flat trajectory and effective terminal ballistics.
The cartridge is widely recognized for its versatility in hunting medium-sized game such as deer and antelope as well as for varmint control. Reloaders benefit from the ability to customize loads, fine-tuning velocity and accuracy to match specific conditions. The higher powder capacity and improved case design allow for enhanced consistency and performance, making the .257 Ackley Improved a popular choice for both recreational shooting and competitive applications.
