About .219 Zipper

The .219 Zipper cartridge was introduced in 1937 by Winchester, designed specifically for lever-action rifles, notably the Winchester Model 64. Its development was part of an effort to create a high-velocity small-caliber round suitable for varmint hunting. Derived from the .25-35 Winchester case, the .219 Zipper aimed to bridge the gap between traditional low-velocity lever-action cartridges and the emerging popularity of fast-moving varmint rounds. Although innovative at the time, its performance was soon overshadowed by more modern cartridges, and commercially loaded ammunition is no longer readily available.

Technically, the .219 Zipper is characterized by its bottlenecked shape with a nominal bullet diameter of .224 inches, although early versions were designed for .223-inch bullets. The case length measures 1.94 inches, and the cartridge overall length is approximately 2.58 inches. Its maximum pressure is considerably lower than most modern high-velocity rounds, a necessary limitation given the design constraints of the lever-action rifles for which it was intended. Nevertheless, it was revolutionary in its ability to produce velocities around 3,100 feet per second with a 56-grain bullet, among the fastest for any lever-action rifle of its era.
